Sargassum
Both phenomenons of oil spills and sargassum strandinds represent similar characteristics for which LE FLOCH DEPOLLUTION contribute its skills :
Intervention responsiveness (less than 48h)
Adaptability (local context, site configuration etc.)
Intervention in protected areas (Natura 200, Marine protected areas etc.)
Intervention in difficult access areas
Training of intervention teams to the use and maintenance of equipment

DEPLOYMENT OF CONTAINMENT/DEFLECTION BOOM
240 m of boom were deployed in the beginning of february near "Anse Champagne" in Saint-François, Guadeloupe. This type of equipment used for sargassum response allow the deflection of sargassum and protect areas near which they are deployed. Sargassum strandings therefore cease once these areas are protected by booms thus making screening operations unnecessary. The aim is to deflect sargassum to a defined collection point where others equipment will be operated.
SCREENING / BEACH CLEANING
Screening/beach cleaning operations were carried out on different locations in Saint-François and Sainte-Anne, Guadeloupe :
Plage du Lagon / La Cocoteraie, Saint-François, the screening/cleaning of this beach was necessary to be able to note the efficiency of the 240m boom deployed near "Anse Champagne". This area being protected from now on by the boom, screening/beach cleaning operations shouldn't be renewed.
Plage des Raisins Clairs et Etang Buisson, Saint-François. Many operations were executed by our team depending on sargassum arrivals.
Plage Anse du Belley, Sainte-Anne. 3-days operation of screening/beach cleaning
EXPERIMENTATION COLLECTING/CONVEYOR BELT FOR SARGASSUM
This experimentation tested on a beach between the Residence Savannah and the Nautical Base in Saint-François, was fruitful and enable us to approve this equipment for the collection of fresh sargassum on shoreline areas.

News - December 2017
Our team is currently working on a project funded by ADEME (The French Environment and Energy Management Agency) for the study of sargassum seaweed recovery for the manufacture of bio-sourced plastics.
Brown sargassum seaweed represent a real scourge for Guadeloupe and Martinique, which have been suffering massive strandings of these seaweeds on their shores for several years. These have many negative effects on human health, the environment and the local economy.
However this seaweeds are not initially toxic, but once beached, they enter the decomposition phase and produce significant releases of gas that can cause olfactory nuisance and health problems.
Therefore, ADEME launched a call for project which goal is to find viable solutions for the valorization of this material.
